Living Life on the Edge

12 tips for the Neurotypical to pull you back from the edge.

Here are 12 tips to be happier and work smarter, not harder, in the corporate environment:

1. Prioritise Self-Care:

Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine…

Schedule regular breaks, exercise, and prioritise SLEEP to recharge your mind and body, to enhance productivity and well-being.

- If you can have sex, do it! Oxytocin is the ultimate winner!

2. Set Boundaries:

Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to prevent burnout.

Define specific work hours and avoid bringing work-related stress into your personal time.

- It sounds easy, but it really is not easy to do, so if you can, just make small changes; 5 minutes this week, 10 minutes next week etc

3. Practice Time Management:

Use time management techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique or time blocking to structure your day effectively.

Prioritise tasks based on importance and urgency to maximise productivity.

-Again baby steps; figure out if ‘banning’ things work for you as a punishment, or rewarding yourself is better; things like Netflix or social media - what is the best way for you to turn away from them and turn towards work? Everyone is different.

4. Delegate Tasks:

Learn to delegate tasks effectively to free up time for high-value activities.

Trust your team members to handle tasks within their expertise, fostering collaboration and empowerment.

-Gain self understanding about why you can’t delegate… A great one for therapy, whether you think you can do it all, or whether you think you can’t do it all

5. Focus on One Task at a Time:

Avoid multitasking and instead focus on one task at a time to maintain focus and productivity.

Break larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

- A one task focus can be super rewarding especially if it is broken down into small “one tasks’

6. Cultivate a Positive Mindset:

Foster a positive mindset by practicing gratitude, mindfulness, and positive self-talk.

Focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems, fostering resilience and optimism.

-It really does work, :) give it a try.

7. Build Strong Relationships:

Invest time in building strong relationships with colleagues, mentors, and leaders.

Cultivate a supportive network that provides encouragement, feedback, and opportunities for growth.

-When in doubt, lean on the team so they can lean on you; how we behave leads others to do the same (in the main)

8. Seek Continuous Learning:

Embrace a growth mindset and actively seek opportunities for learning and development.

Attend workshops, conferences, and online courses to enhance your skills and knowledge.

-A favourite, they beauty of CPD is it helps us to realise what we actually DO know … Fab!

9. Take Regular Breaks:

Incorporate short breaks throughout your day to recharge and prevent mental fatigue.

Step away from your desk, take a walk, or engage in a brief mindfulness exercise to boost productivity and creativity.

-Pretend you’re a smoker; take yourself outside for a “breath of fresh air” , look into the middle distance and take a big inhale and long exhale

10. Set Realistic Goals:

Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals that align with your values and priorities.

Break goals into actionable steps and track progress regularly to stay motivated and focused.

-Even just the tiniest of steps, get a tick list going, if ticks make you tick. Did i brush my hair today? Tiiiiick!

11. Embrace Flexibility:

Embrace flexibility in your approach to work, allowing for adaptation to changing circumstances and priorities.

Be open to new ideas, feedback, and opportunities for growth.

-You never know.

12. Celebrate Achievements:

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.

Take time to reflect on your successes and milestones, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment and motivation.

-100%!! Life is hard enough

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can cultivate a happier, more fulfilling work experience while maximizing productivity and success in the corporate environment. That said, I put “neurotypical” in the title for a reason - some people can do some or even …. all of these, but chances are they wouldn’t be looking at a therapy page.

This list is a bog-standard Chat list, and yes, people can do them, but if you can’t do any or few, know that that is a truth about you, you are smart enough to know that if you have tried any of these and you just. can’t. do. it... For the love of nature, Stop trying! Either life is just too demanding at the moment, in which case that probably needs looking at, or you aren’t built to follow the classical neurotypical behaviour, so take a bit of time out to have a think about how you work.

I know for example, I am RUBBISH at this next point, but have found a way through:

5. Focus on One Task at a Time:

Avoid multitasking and instead focus on one task at a time to maintain focus and productivity.

Break larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

I need to have three important tasks on the go at once, so I can feel like I am avoiding two of them, and subsequently I will do the third; If I have a blog to write, I will plan to do my taxes or write a shopping list (both are loathsome for me) so in avoiding the other two I will do the third.

The most important part is getting to understand how we work and that way we can crack on without …shame. Yay!
